# Ask Remark

> Use the dashboard assistant to look up, create, and update your Remark setup in plain language.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Ask Remark appears in the dashboard when it's enabled for your workspace. Contact `support@remark.ai` to turn it on.

**Ask Remark** is an AI assistant built into the Remark dashboard. You describe what you want in plain language, and Ask Remark looks up the data, drafts the change, and waits for your approval before saving it. It works across experts, intents, the Encyclopedia, workflows, Playground chats, and the other areas listed below.

Ask Remark acts as you. It can only see and change what your own [team member permissions](/dashboard/team-member-permissions.md) allow.

## Open Ask Remark

Open Ask Remark in any of these ways:

* Select **Ask Remark** at the bottom of the navigation rail.
* Press **Cmd+/** on Mac or **Ctrl+/** on Windows. Press it again to close the panel.
* Open the command menu with **Cmd+K** or **Ctrl+K** and choose **Ask Remark**.

The panel opens beside the page you're on and stays open as you move between pages, so you can keep a conversation going while you check the results. On small screens, the panel fills the screen.

| Control | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Conversation history** | Lists your earlier Ask Remark conversations in this workspace. Select one to continue it. |
| **New conversation** | Starts a conversation with no earlier context. |
| **Maximize** / **Minimize** | Widens the panel across the page, or returns it to its side position. |
| **Close** | Hides the panel. Your conversation stays where you left it. |

Your conversation history is private to you. Other team members can't see your conversations.

Two pages also hand work to Ask Remark directly:

* On an empty **Encyclopedia**, select **Ask Remark** to start building it from your documents.
* On **Message feedback**, select **Ask Remark to help** on an unresolved negative feedback item.

## What Ask Remark can do

Ask Remark answers questions about your workspace and makes changes in the areas below. Each area needs the permission shown. "Every team member" means the task is part of the baseline access described in [Team member permissions](/dashboard/team-member-permissions.md#baseline-access-for-every-team-member).

| Area | Ask Remark can | Permission for changes |
| - | - | - |
| [Experts](/dashboard/experts.md) | Summarize an expert profile and its results, generate an agent, check on a generation request, and update an agent's name, tagline, bio, location, or work experience. | Experts & teams |
| [Intents](/dashboard/intents.md) | Find and explain intents, draft new ones, edit matching criteria, instructions, actions, and channels, attach Encyclopedia articles, and archive intents. | Knowledge & AI content |
| [Encyclopedia](/dashboard/encyclopedia.md) | Build an encyclopedia from your files, links, and knowledge sources. Search, read, create, edit, move, and set effective dates on articles. Suggest edits and flag missing information for review. | Knowledge & AI content |
| Knowledge | For workspaces that use Knowledge instead of the Encyclopedia: list facts and sources, add sources from URLs, add and edit facts, and archive sources. | Knowledge & AI content |
| [Workflows](/dashboard/workflows.md) | Create a workflow, build its steps, triggers, and input in the editor, test it, read its runs, and publish, unpublish, duplicate, or archive it. | Every team member |
| [Playground](/dashboard/playground.md) | Read your Playground chats, explain which intents matched and which actions ran with their inputs and outputs, and suggest intent changes. | Every team member |
| [Message feedback](/dashboard/inbox.md#message-feedback) | Read feedback, list open items, and mark negative feedback resolved or unresolved. | Every team member, for the feedback they can see |
| [Inbox](/dashboard/inbox.md) | Find and filter conversations, read transcripts, and trace an agent action back to its intent. List smart tags and their counts, and create, edit, or delete smart tags. | Conversations to read. Owners and admins for smart tag changes. |
| Analytics | Report the metrics on **Home**, such as revenue, conversions, CSAT, top products, and conversation starts, and compare time periods. Read published [A/B test results](/sdk/ab-testing.md). | Every team member (read only) |
| Review summaries | Generate, edit, publish, and unpublish product review summaries, and change review summary settings. | Integrations & products |
| Team members | List team members and invite new ones. | Owners and admins |

Areas that depend on a workspace setting, such as the Encyclopedia and Workflows, work in Ask Remark when they're enabled for your workspace. Ask Remark reads Playground chats but can't start a chat, send test messages, or leave feedback. It doesn't publish Encyclopedia articles, so new and edited articles stay drafts until you select **Publish**.

Ask Remark can also answer questions about Remark from this documentation, search the web, and read web pages you link to. To share a file, select **Attach file**, drag the file into the message box, or paste an image. Ask Remark accepts PDF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, text, Markdown, CSV, JSON, XML, Excel, and Word files up to 128 MB each, and it can analyze spreadsheets and data files.

## Approve changes

Before Ask Remark saves a change, it pauses and shows a card that starts with **Ask Remark wants to perform** and lists each change. The card names the record it will change and, where it can, shows the current value next to the new one.

* Select **Approve all** to make the changes.
* Select **Reject all** to cancel them.
* Type a new message instead to reject the changes and tell Ask Remark what to do differently.

A few actions run without a card because they don't change live behavior:

* Creating an empty workflow from outside the workflow editor. Each step Ask Remark then adds still needs your approval.
* Testing a workflow. As with the editor's **Test** button, most steps return their mock output, but HTTP `GET` and Transform steps run for real.
* Suggesting an Encyclopedia edit or flagging missing information. These create suggestions for you to review.

On settings pages, Ask Remark can fill in form fields for you. Filled-in fields stay unsaved so you can review them on the page. Ask Remark saves the form only when you ask it to, and saving also needs your approval.

In the workflow editor, each change Ask Remark makes to the draft needs your approval. While a change is waiting, the editor shows **Ask Remark is editing this workflow** and locks the editor. If you leave the page before approving, Ask Remark cancels the pending change.

Select **Stop** while Ask Remark is working to end the response. Changes you already approved stay in place.

## Reference articles, intents, and other objects

Type `@` in the message box to search your Encyclopedia articles and intents by name. Select a result to add it to your message as a chip. If you type `@` with nothing after it, the articles and intents you opened or discussed most recently appear under **Recent**. Archived intents and deleted articles don't appear.

On **Message feedback**, selecting **Ask Remark to help** adds the feedback item as a chip and starts the message "Help me resolve this feedback:" for you to finish.

Ask Remark opens the full article, intent, or feedback item behind each chip before it answers, so you don't need to paste its contents. Write the rest of the message around the chip to say what you want done with it, such as "compare," "shorten," or "find what's missing."

Ask Remark also knows which dashboard page you're on and which record is open. On an intent or article, a message like "summarize this" refers to the record on screen.

## Permissions

Ask Remark runs every lookup and change as the signed-in team member, with that member's permissions. Approving a change doesn't grant extra access. If your role doesn't include a permission, Ask Remark can't use it either, and it tells you which permission the task needs.

For example, a staff member with only the **Conversations** permission group can ask Ask Remark to summarize this week's conversations. If they ask it to rewrite an intent, the change fails, because editing intents needs **Knowledge & AI content**.

Owners and admins have every permission. To change what a staff member can do, see [Team member permissions](/dashboard/team-member-permissions.md).

## Write good prompts

Ask Remark works best when you name the record, the outcome, and any limits. Use `@` to point at the exact article or intent. Attach source files or paste links when Ask Remark needs your content. For a change that spans several records, ask for a plan first and approve it before Ask Remark starts.

| Task | Example prompt |
| - | - |
| Draft an intent | "Create an intent for warranty claims. Ask for the order number and a photo of the damage, and hand off to a person if the order is more than a year old. Enable it in playground only." |
| Update an article | "Update @Returns and exchanges from the attached policy PDF. Keep the existing sections and list anything that conflicts with the current article." |
| Review a Playground chat | "Read my latest Playground chat. The agent offered a refund before asking for the order number. Which intent matched, and what should change?" |
| Work through feedback | "List unresolved negative feedback from the last two weeks and group it by the intent that matched." |
| Build a workflow | "Create a workflow that starts when a conversation is escalated to a human, generates a two-sentence summary, and sends it to our webhook. Test it with sample input before I publish." |
| Check performance | "Compare revenue and conversion rate for the last 30 days against the 30 days before. What changed most?" |
| Generate an agent | "Generate a new agent with a female persona who specializes in trail running shoes." |

After Ask Remark creates or edits an intent or article, test the result in the [Playground](/dashboard/playground.md) before turning it on for live conversations.

## Troubleshooting

### Ask Remark doesn't appear

Ask Remark is enabled per workspace. Contact `support@remark.ai` to turn it on.

### Ask Remark says it can't make a change

Your role is missing the permission that change needs. Ask a workspace owner or admin to review your permission groups in **Settings > Team members**.

### Encyclopedia requests don't work

Ask Remark can work with the Encyclopedia only when the Encyclopedia is enabled for your workspace. See [Encyclopedia](/dashboard/encyclopedia.md).

### An approval card disappeared

Sending a new message rejects any changes still waiting for approval. In the workflow editor, leaving the page also cancels a pending change. Ask again to get a new card.

### Form changes didn't save

Ask Remark leaves form fields unsaved until you save the form on the page or ask Ask Remark to save it.
